Art Classes
Ages 5-10 (unless indicated)
Fall Classes will begin in September 2017!

Painting and Drawing
paintdrawThis class is a classic example of how, if you give kids a little direction, a little encouragement, and a few ideas, their creative energy will explode off the page, light up the room, and amaze you! Every week we look at a different artist or style of art. It may be Georgia O'Keeffe, Henry Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, or cubism, abstraction, aboriginal art, or something they particularly want to learn about (one student was fascinated by Escher, another only wanted to paint Mark Rothko). We look at what elements are important in the work, and then they try it themselves. We use tempera paint, acrylic paint, pen and ink, paper, and canvas. The results are generally pretty wonderful, but we believe, and we teach, that the process is as important as the product!

Intro to Drawing
drawingThis is a new class designed to hone those artistic talents! What is drawing? It’s a dialogue with a line on a page. Perspective, proportion, light and shadow, composition - these are the wonderful and exciting elements of drawing. Whether it’s drawing an egg on a white sheet, our own shoe, or a winter scene, we will learn how to look at and talk about the art of drawing. Our drawing materials will include pencil, charcoal, pastel, and more. Join us for this fun, interesting class!

Comics and Animation
drawanimateTraditional comics, outlandish cartoons, Japanese manga cartoons - all are addressed in this lively class!
We then move on to animation, creating our own gifs, claymation, and more.
We learn drawing techniques -drawing people, drawing a face with expression, creating perspective, and learning how to compose a page. We also discuss plot elements (good guy, bad guy ... how can we develop this?). There tends to be a low murmur in the class as the kids draw, share their work, and ask questions of the teacher: How do I make it look like he's running? How do I draw a foot? How do I do this hair? How do I make it look like she's thinking? We look at Pokemon, Disney, Dragonball Z, or whatever the class brings in or is interested in. Students create their own characters for their comic pages, and for their animation. A fun and interesting class!
