A class for boys and girls ages 5-10, Wearable Art means we will create art projects that we can wear! T-shirts, jewelry, Art & Pizza
Just like it sounds, this is the class where we get to combine our two favorite things - art and eating!
No worries about dinner, because you get pizza after the art project. Art projects will include paintings, crafts, and sculpture.
Dragons and Wild Things
This class ranges from the art of Asia - dragons and paintings - to art inspired by our favorite books - as in Where the
Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak. The art projects will use collage, paper sculpture, and paint to create bold, beautiful objects
and paintings. Mommy & Me
Have you ever seen a child make playdough, glue jewels on an egg carton and call it a caterpillar, stand
at an easel and paint glorious swaths of color (or 3 colors all mixed together) onto one piece of paper, sing,
a song, string some beads, all in an hour? Well that's what you will see in a typical Mommy & Me class!
Take one 2-4 year old, one Mom, Dad, Nanny or Grandparent, one hour, one painting on an easel, one mixing up of
playdough, and one craft of the day, and you have a Mommy & Me class. Fast-paced, active, and fun! This
is a great way to bring out the artist in your little one! Art Play
Imagine a group of 4-year olds sitting around a table with their teacher. They are giggling and laughing
as they choose which color glitter to use, and which jewels to glue on. They are quiet and serious as they
focus on neatly pouring their sand into their sand art bottles. They will tell you exactly what time is
snack time, and how to arrange the table. They know how to paint at their easels, and they love to listen
to a story - about an artist, a color, a theme - and then they will tell you that they know all about blue,
they have a blue shirt! Or they know all about a still life, because they buy fruit at a grocery store!
The world is a very exciting place, and they are creative and eager to explore! Painting and Drawing
This class is a classic example of how, if you give kids a little direction, a little encouragement, and a
few ideas, their creative energy will explode off the page, light up the room, and amaze you! Every week we
look at a different artist or style of art. It may be Georgia O'Keeffe, Henry Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh,
or cubism, abstraction, aboriginal art, or something they particularly want to learn about (one student was
fascinated by Escher, another only wanted to paint Mark Rothko). We look at what elements are important in
the work, and then they try it themselves. We use tempera paint, acrylic paint, pen and ink, paper, and canvas.
The results are generally pretty wonderful, but we believe, and we teach, that the process is as important
as the product! Sprinkle in a few crafts, and you have a Painting and Drawing class.
For inspiration, visit the Mt. Washington Post Office to see examples of work done in the class. Sculpture
This class in 3-dimensional art covers everything from traditional clay bowls and paper-mache, to found art
sculpture and objects made from all sorts of things. The sophistication of the finished piece depends on the student's age
and ability, but we believe that the sky's the limit! This is a hands-on, active class, with lots of activity. Be
prepared to make a mess, have fun, and create! Crafts, Crafts, Crafts
Have you ever made a maraca out of a light bulb?
A mobile out of keys?
A picture frame from old CD's?
Along with traditional flower pots (we cover ours with tiles and paint), and painted picture frames, we will
try some new ideas. Be prepared to make a mess as we pull out the plaster, to take your time as we sort through
the seed beads, or to follow directions as we transform sculpey clay into beads (cooking them in the toaster oven,
of course!) With enthusiasm and care, we focus on each craft and how we can make it our own unique creation, fun
to make and fun to live with! Famous Artists and You
Let's take a look at wonderful, creative artists, past and present, and see what we can learn from them!
This is a hands-on class involving different media - we may look at Calder and make mobiles,
or Chagall and create our own dreamscapes, or Van Gogh and paint a starry night with our own landscape.
How about sculpture like Louise Nevelson, or self-portraits like Frida Kahlo, or city scenes like Jacob Laurence?
The possibilties are endless -- what a fun way to learn about artists, and to practice it ourselves! Art Around The World
You need a passport to take this class! But don't worry, we will make one on the first day.
At every stop, your passport will be stamped, and we will explore the art of that country.
We may go to Australia and use Q-tips to recreate aboriginal paintings. We may make fantastic
masks in Africa, use rice paper and prints in Japan, make paper-mache maracas in Spain, or paint
beautiful landscapes in France.
The world is full of art - come explore with us! Comics and Cartooning
This is primarily a drawing class, with emphasis on drawing the figure, drawing a face with expression, perspective,
and how to compose a page. We also discuss plot elements (good guy, bad guy ... how can we develop this?).
There tends to be a low murmur in the class as the kids draw, share their work, and ask questions of the teacher: How do
I make it look like he's running? How do I draw a foot? How do I do this hair? How do I make it look like she's thinking?
We look at Pokemon, Disney, Dragonball Z, or whatever the class brings in or is interested in. Students learn how
to create their own characters, and how to place them in a comic-book setting. This is a great class, filled with
serious artists who are still 10-year old boys and girls. They learn quickly, and are usually still drawing when
their parents come to pick them up! Digital Photography
Learn the basics of photography - composition, lighting, telling stories. Using digital cameras, we will focus on a new
concept each week, with references to well-known photographers and their work. We will print out the photos during the
class, and have fun sharing our photography and ideas. Art and Music
Over the summer, we were lucky enough to have a wonderful music teacher, Natalie Hankin, join us in Reisterstown and have a music
time with our campers. They created their own orchestra out of her endless box of instruments, and soon they were conducting, playing,
singing in unison! We will continue the fun with Young Artists and Fun With Music class for ages 4-7, where they will have 45 minutes
of art, and 45 minutes of music. Learn the basics of rhythm, percussion, and what makes up an orchestra. Next, we have the 8-12 yr.
old class, where they learn painting and drawing, and then participate in a Recorder Ensemble. We will even have a concert at the end
of the class! Adults
Furniture Painting: Learn Techniques of crackling, sponging, and basic painting. Transform a piece of
furniture into a treasure. No experience necessary.
Parties
Birthday Parties at The Painting Workshop are fun for the kids, relaxing for the parents, and creative for everyone!
Art Camp Day
This is a fun-filled day of art activities for those days when schools are closed.
You can choose to register from 9:00-1:00 ($35), or from 9:00-3:00 ($50).
In the morning, we have a painting project. This may be looking at an artist, and painting in the style of that artist, or talking about a concept, such as a still life.
There are small crafts, art games, and outdoor time if weather permits.
For students who stay until 3:00, there will be a larger craft project, such as clay or mosaic flowerpots.
Both sessions bring lunch! Summer Camp
We look forward all year to summer camp! Beginning the moment school lets out, and continuing until Labor Day, we meet every week for Summer Camp. |
